28 this morning and pouring the snow when we got up. We ended up with about 8". Temps in the teens tonight, as we roll back the clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
This morning: just as predicted.
So an at-home day for us, which is just perfect, because, well...read on.
Yesterday was a packed, wonderful, long day. Bright sun off and on, warm enough to be without a coat or even a jacket most of the day. And boy was it full of events.
First off, there was the wedding. At my house. At 9:30 in the morning. And I was officiating. And serving breakfast.
The story: granddaughter Hannah's fiance' got a new job, in South Carolina, so they're moving. She wanted to get married before this big move, which is happening next week. So she texted her granny on Wednesday and asked if I would do the ceremony if they could get the license.
"Sure," I said. "When?"
"Friday."
And so that is what happened. Granddaughter Sarah was here visiting from Colorado, so she picked flowers for a bouquet and for the table, and I made a cake--a hickory nut cake since Larry's been shelling a lot of them lately. Larry was up at 7 starting sausage and fried potatoes, and I made biscuits and scrambled eggs.
The wedding bouquet--the flowers were just buds when picked but opened nicely overnight.
Nothing traditional about this wedding! The bride wore black with a lovely lace duster and large-brimmed black hat, the groom in black shirt and blue jeans, and me the minister in the same. We had breakfast after the ceremony and had cake for dessert. We were a very small group, just what Hannah wanted as she wanted this to be simple and stress-free. I think we managed that.
It was actually fun and sweet, and now they are officially married and ready for the next stages of their life. I am so glad I got the minister's license back in December when a friend asked me if I would conduct their wedding. This isn't something I ever thought I'd do in my life, but here I am doing it.
When the wedding was over. we were off to the airport so Sarah could fly back to her home in Colorado. I sure miss her already but she'll be back in a few months so we have that to look forward to.
Then we drove from the airport to our Ravenswood booth to add a few things and just check up on it since we hadn't been in all week. We made no big changes as we were pretty tired, but it was nice to see that sales had picked up quite well. A bit of shopping in town, then to a restaurant for the wedding dinner--with more people there than were at the wedding. It was a great evening, and we were so pleased to meet the groom's parents.
And the oddest thing--it turned out that the groom's Dad is the youngest brother of one of Larry's best childhood friends! Who, I had learned when doing Larry's family tree, is also a distant cousin of Larry's, although he never knew that when they were kids. Larry is Hannah's step-grandfather actually so no family link there, but how small this West Virginia world is.
Today we've been slugs, resting up and looking at the snow for the most part. Tomorrow I imagine we'll be back in our usual form but this break today has been nice.
You are a woman of many powers! Best wishes to the newlyweds :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Quinn. Life can certainly bring us some unexpected turns, can't it? I hope you and the goats are still doing well.
DeleteYou had a bit of a happening there...an eventful day before the snow one to just rest and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was, Barbara. A good one, just a surprise. Still enjoying that good cake.
DeleteOh what a wonderful day...so beautiful. It sounds perfect.
ReplyDeleteIt was, Jenny. Now, my prayer is that all goes well for them as they start down this new road together.
DeleteOh wow! How truly special to be able to marry your grand-daughter, that is so wonderful. She sounds like a wonderful soul, I wish her well starting this new chapter of her life.
ReplyDeleteThis was not a life experience I was expecting, but it is amazing to be able to do this. Thank you for the good wishes--they'll need them in this crazy world we're living in these days.
