Happy St. David's Day

49 this morning, clear and breezy. Warmed to 75, hazy clouds now, and rain expected tonight. I am writing this on the porch, just as the sun is going down. A lovely day. But in like a lamb, so you know what that means later!

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Happy anniversary to our youngest son and his wife too, celebrating in their home in faraway Miami.

And happy St. David's Day to all of you of Welsh descent.  I admit I was happy to learn I had a bitbof that beautiful country in me, and perhaps that drives my love of daffodils. Or not. I am such a sucker for them; I realized when browsing my blog that there must be 30 or more posts about these perky early blooms.

So, to keep up with my apparent obsession, here are photos from my garden walk today.

The old cellar top is Larry's domain.

By the front door.

And volunteers at the edge of the woods.

These had not bloomed well for years, because of the shade from the ash tree, but now the ash is nearly dead, sadly, and the daffodils are thriving again. Not many blue bottles left on the tree either. As the tree dies and branches break off, the bottles fall. I stubbornly refuse to cut the tree down just yet.

More woodland volunteers.

This little bunch, also volunteers, are usually the earliest to bloom but they were a little late this year.

Still more surprises in the woods.

These are under a big maple in the front garden.

.
And these are the only remainders of a huge perennial border I planted in the late 70s. When I started working away from home the garden was neglected and eventually I had to give up on it. I miss it so. It was filled with 50 kinds of iris, and wormwood, tansy,  Coraopolis, roses,  phlox, candy tuft, and so many more plants. Ah well. It would probably have been more than I could take care of these days anyway, and I am grateful for these sturdy hangers-on.

There are still more! We planted some daffodils at the top of our driveway, and new bulbs i out into my current big flower bed have not yet bloomed. So expect more yellow photos soon!

  3. How lovely to see your perennials coming up in so many places! I don't know what will happen here this Spring, since there were bulbs starting to sprout in late December and early January, due to the crazy warm temperatures. I'm hoping they will have enough energy left for a second start, to grow and bloom in actual Spring. Same for the trees.

  4. Did you wear leeks? I understand that is part of the St Davids tradition.

  7. Your daffodils are wonderful, you can never have too many! They are not quite out here yet, they will be a few more weeks yet, we have green spears but no buds yet.
