Flea Market Haul

71 this morning and humid. Rain in the forecast, but nothing so far. Sigh. We need a really good soaking.

We had a good time browsing the big annual flea market yesterday and visiting with vendor friends. Here is some of what we found.

Lots of old wood boxes! These sell very well, particularly in the Fall when people are putting together harvest displays. I really liked the large wood toolbox too. It would make a great planter, or could be used as a centerpiece on a large table.

Isn't the little table sweet? It was made by a friend from a treadle sewing machine base. I will need to repaint it but I think it will do well in our booth. There is avlarge metal basket in this photo, not easy to see. And a sweetblittlecred child's chair.

I carried these two inside before I thought to take photos. The one in front is a nice old primitive vine table; theater one is newer and needs paint.

Can't tell in tbe photo but this candelabra is the prettiest green color. Just needs the base glued back on as it is loose.

I didn't find a lot of good smalls but did come home with these.  On the far right is a little bell that says "ring for beer". That will be a gag gift this Christmas.  Next is the oil lamp base that has been electrified unfortunately. Perhaps I will find a replacement burner for it. In front of the land as 3 butter presses, two of which are made of marigold carnival glass. I have never seen one of these before. I got all three for a good deal, and will sell the glass ones on eBay where they bring a very good price. The compote is pink milk glass by Jeannette Glass, made in tbe 60s. In front of it a Hazel Atlas turquoise mug, and last the large enamelware bowl in the prettiest jade green color

Here is an antique wringer, and a lot of newer wood spoons. I will rub them down with butcher block oil to give them a little patina, which people want for display. They could still be used for cooking with that oil finish though, as it is food-safe.

Probably not a good buy, but what a neat serving dish! The base really looks like handmade glass. I may end up keeping this.

One thing I definitely bought to keep is this dehydrator.  Mine is showing its age and I had been looking for a replacement. For $7, this one will do just fine.

And last, the ugliest lite purple Christmas tree! Don't laugh; it is for my Halloween window display. I will string it with orange and black lights. I have some ideas about this window: I have an antique wedding dress and a stramounk outfit, and a set of heavy metal candelabras set aside for this display. Then maybe a black table or dresser? We shall see!

I I did an hour and a half of stringtrimming this morning, weeded, and got the celery wrapped to blanch. By the time I was done I was soaked to the skin with sweat. Sweet tea never tasted so good! Now it's time to get back to it. But first, here's what we harvested this morning.

This is purslane, considered a weed but I let it grow between the rows in my garden. It is a most delicious green, better than spinach I think.

Three smallish tomatoes! Our first, from the cheater plants that I bought just to get early tomatoes.

Squash and zucchini are blooming like crazy.

Larry dug a basket of new potatoes because he ran over the tops accidentally with the mower while pulling out the pea vines. If these are any indication, we should have a good crop.

And 2 more cabbages, which I think are the last of our early cabbage.

A nice haul. I think it will be a veggies only dinner tonight.

  1. Good haul. The butter presses are neat. I haven't seen those before as well.

    1. Thank you! The hunt is always fun. Now, to get this stuff sold, that's work.

  2. You certainly collect the stuff, including veggies.

    1. Yes, we must always be on the lookout for new stock. Our veggies supply us, and our son and granddaughter whenever they need anything. We get such pleasure out of growing them.

  3. What a treasure hunt! Love that beer bell, better not send it my way, Barb would not appreciate it. When we go to garage sales and flea markets, we will often see things we think would sell for much more but usually pass them up as we really don't know for sure. You, on the other hand, have years of knowledge helping you with your decisions!

    1. I have learned a lot, and have had the help of some generous people along the way, Jim. It is really fun, except maybe the moving of heavy pieces! My son told me, "Mom. You need to get a lighter hobby, like stamp-collecting!" He may have a point!

  5. You do like to keep busy :) And here I was patting myself on the back for getting a few seeds planted yesterday before the next 3-day rains started last night. How I WISH we could share weather! I wonder if there will be any first cut hay at all this year, or if anything that gets cut will just be a bundle of expensive, toxic mold.

    1. Oh do I wish we could share that rain! We had a little shower this morning, not nearly enough. But how sad about the hay! What will you do???
