Auction

61°f this morning, 16°C. Cloudy after yet another day and night of heavy rain interspersed with drizzle.

After a week of mostly rainy days, it looks like we might have a clear weekend ahead. Fingers crossed! You can just imagine the mud, and of course this was the week the State Roads guys decided to grade our road. Ah me. At least the holes are filled for the moment. I believe they added more gravel but it's hard to tell with everything so muddy.

We spent Thursday working in the gardens, as the rain held off until late evening. I concentrated on the flowerbeds, weeding, planting and transplanting.  It was a perfect day for it. Larry set posts for the new blackberry plants, and also for the peas; he will string wire for the peas to climb on today. Then we both put down cardboard and straw to mulch the tomatoes. It was really still a little too wet to be in that garden but we managed by laying down the cardboard and walking on it while putting down the straw.

Yesterday was auction pickup day, over in Ohio. I had spent Wednesday evening bidding on an online auction, and we got some pretty cool stuff. We dropped some things off in our booth on the way home. Saves beating it to death on our bumpy road!

This butter churn was a great find; its oval shape is unique. I found a couple like it online, dated to the mid-1800's.

There was also this tall leaded glass window pane, which had a couple small cracks i did not see when bidding. My bad. Still, it is a very pretty piece.

A fun win was this cast iron tractor lawn waterer. How cool is that?

And then a handcranked ice cream maker you can see below right in the photo, along with a one gallon galvanized metal kerosene can. The cabinet with drawers is a machinists chest. It was a frontpiece that is laying on top; that piece fits over the drawers and can be locked in place. On top is a Dazey butter churn, and a couple glass doorknobs.

The rest of our buys are still in the van, to be unloaded and cleaned up today. If I can make myself stay indoors!

  1. Love the butter churn, we have one and bought one for our daughter. The ice cream maker, on the other hand, looks like work!
