Brave Little Flower

16°f this morning, a regular heat wave. Mostly cloudy today, a few flurries as I write.

The plants I brought in for the winter are struggling, but then this one...

Bless its little flower heart, blooming when it is so cold! Isn't it something. Just makes me smile.

Somehow I lost a whole day this week. I was sure today was Wednesday, so the reminder call for Larry's appointment tomorrow caught me by surprise. Wait, what? This is Thursday?

So, instead of going to our booths tomorrow,  Larry will go to Huntington for his appointment, and I will stay here and mind the dogs. Because Buddy cannot be trusted to stay home, and it is too cold to leave him outside on his run. I have never been quite this constricted by pets before and I have to say I don't like it much. But with our boy, I have no choice. And he's worth it, so there it is. My heart says we may not have him long because of his drive to run away---he could be run over or shot, attacked by other dogs,, or it is possible that someone might pick him up. But while we have him, he's my boy.

I have been in cooking mode this week---who hasn't in this weather! Yesterday I made cinnamon oatmeal pancakes with warm spiced apple topping for breakfast, and canned more venison. Today, I made cranberry orange scones for breakfast.

My scones are different from those found in coffeeshops and bakeries. I use my mother's recipe, which is more like sweetened biscuits, not as sweet or fatty as the ones I find elsewhere.
Dinner was venison and kraut,  which I like better than pork and kraut. Venison from the freezer, kraut from the cellar, and potatoes from the store. Hearty fare, but fits this hearty weather.

Speaking of my mother, she never became a US citizen, and I know she did not update her registration (called green card nowadays) as required every ten years. I think she found it amusing that she was "illegal". I doubt that in today's political environment she would have felt the same.

Thinking of Bill tonight, as Storm Eowyn is set to cause some major havoc in Ireland. Stay safe, Bill!

  1. The scones sound and look very delicious, but I would love some of your venison dinner! Stay warm and enjoy more fun time in the kitchen!

  2. Is there any way to put a tracker on that dog? What about an electric fence?

  4. We had a couple of dogs that were runners and you are right, one day they will not come back. We just imagined ours picked up by some loving family who cared for them the rest of their lives....

  5. A geranium, yes? You have what they call a green thumb, obviously. I did not watch orange man take charge either. Up here we are running scared about his tariff calls. A negotiation point, we figure, but for what? The frightening bit is the auto industry tie ins in Ontario. If that cooperation bites the dust, a lot of people will be out of jobs and hope.
