Slow Saturday

19°f, about -7.5C this morning. And not snowing for the first time in several days! Mostly cloudy all day, warmed up to 37°, a regular heat wave.

It has been just a nice day, one of those where nothing big happens, and nothing much is on the agenda.

I talked to my oldest son this morning, who was sitting on a beach on St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands! This son is a quiet guy and doesn't often think to call and let me know what's going on in his life---my sister actually sent me this photo of him on the front page of her local paper (she just lives one county over from him). He's the guy on the right.

Did he think to send this picture along to Mama? Of course not, but in his defense, as president of his bank he is often in the paper for various community things. Still, I am always happy to see pictures of any of my crew.

When he asked what we had been up to, what could I say? We really haven't been up to anything worth talking about. Just the ordinary stuff of our usual life: coping with the weather, dealing with the dogs and the booths, etc. The only thing I could think of that was halfway exciting was getting 3 new chickens! How pathetic is that.

It made me sort of wistful for the old storytelling days, when I was so busy, either researching,  recording CDs, traveling, teaching, and what have you. But then I remember how tired I would be and how I longed for some extended time of doing absolutely nothing, and I settle back in my chair with my book or phone very contentedly.

So what did we do today? Well, let's see. Larry took the dogs for 2 long walks, and worked on a couple furniture repair projects. I did the usual cleaning, sorted laundry, sorted out the totes we brought home from the booths,  cleared up clutter, cleaned some silver, did my exercises ....and that's about it. How boring. And yet, somehow very satisfying.

And since I did nothing photoworthy, here's a few pics from the booths yesterday. At least I actually did do something Friday! And we had a nice lunch with a couple friends, and stopped to chat with our neighbor Dave on the way home, so it was a good day.

A seated Buddha, and part of a Ouija board thingies that we found in a table that came from a Masonic Lodge in Marietta, Ohio.

Hard to see in this photo but that is a handmade dragon mug, so ugly it's cool.

I brought in a few pictures I had planned to hang in our bedroom, but changed my mind. The top one, hard to see with the reflection, is probably from the 30s and is a version of the "courting couple" often seen on china and in art prints from the 30's-50's. I really liked the white on black one. It's a mixed media collage.

I added the vintage Kodak camera to this shelf. Old cameras are pretty popular, both with young people who are into using them, and for decor use.

A grouping of vintage small wallets and bags. These were part of an auction lot that included one other not pictured here, which was a really nice needlepoint bag, probably from the 1920's or earlier.

I didn't think to take any pictures at our other location, so that will have to wait until our next visit.

Tomorrow is auction pickup day, so we'll be over in Ohio again. Always a fun time, seeing what we won, and maybe I can convince Larry to take one of the many back ways to the auction house.
Right now, I am going to finish my cup of Constant Comment tea, and enjoy this lovely fire.
(Re-did the mantle with some of my Niagara Falls stuff, which I seem to have accumulated.)

Stay well, friends.

  2. How fun to hear from your son. I can't imagine what it feels like to have all of your children/grandchildren spread all over. I have one child & one grandchild & they live right next door to me in my old house that our son grew up in.

When I hear about your ordinary days I think of Tasha Tudor or Sharon Lovejoy. The simple, ordinary things we do at home are things we should cherish & I know you do. Some people spend decades wishing for more time to enjoy a simple life. And marking nature, following & enjoying the seasons, there is nothing sweeter to me. I wish I were more artistic to be able to paint or draw the things I see around me. But writing about it is a talent not everyone has.

    1. Thank you, June. I try to keep moving, because we all know we need to as we get older.

  9. You may say you haven't been up to much, but your day sounds quite full. Better than sitting in front of the telly all day and complaining that there's nothing to do.

    1. That's true, and one reason we Don have TV service! Too easy to while away a day like that.

  10. You are always on the go so taking a slow day should be enjoyable. My wife is like that, she'll stitch or read a book. Have a nice week!

  11. Waiting to hear back from you on shipping cost for the plate and your address if you need a check beforehand. I sent a screenshot to you of the plate I wanted with my address. Hope you got it. I hate to have the wrong plate sent out.

  12. I do cherish the "down days" when nothing spectacular is happening. Today a friend wanted to go to Aldy's in Asheville, and I kind of wanted to be around trees. So we went for a walk and then shopped. Big excitement, eh? I'm so grateful for the internet which provides keeping up with current events, and blogging and then streaming entertainment on TV. I think it's pretty costly however, and may cut out the TV stuff if I feel like it's too much of a drain. As the weather improves, I hope to be outside more anyway.

  13. Ah........the fire looks inviting and warm. It's been colder than normal it seems across the whole country this year. Liked the vintage little lamps, so colorful. How nice you got to talk to your son, even if you didn't feel like you had anything exciting to tell him. Hope your travels to Ohio go well. I'm from Ohio; though we are currently in SC. We left Ohio for the winter.

  16. Nothing wrong with a quiet Saturday. We had a quiet Sunday, just sat around and read. Do kids still use film cameras? Where does one even get film developed nowadays?

  18. Your booth is looking lovely! Very nice things. Sometimes I really want down days -- even a string of them. We keep such paces, and not always fun stuff. I was out of it this weekend, not feeling well. It was nice in its own way to be still.

  19. My husband's parents did the same kind of treasure hunt and resale that you describe here. They had a booth and also ran a part time business out of an old house that JG's dad inherited. It was fascinating to see what they found, and I am really enjoying seeing your , um, loot.
