What a Day

No idea of the temperature this morning as I wasn't home.

It's been a bit of a couple of days.

Yesterday afternoon we left for Huntington for Larry's early appointment next day at the VA for his cardioversion,  to get his heart back in rhythm.

Did you know there is a place called Fisher House where veterans and their spouse or caregiver can stay for free? There are 97 of these houses located across the US, built by the Fisher family as a way to help veterans. Three more will be built soon. What a gift!

The house is beautifully furnished, with a well-stocked kitchen and spacious rooms.

There is a large patio as well, and a gas grill testifies to occasional cookouts. When we arrived, we were greeted by the appetizing aroma of pot roast, and the other couples were just gathering for dinner.

We were in bed early and up early too. I made myself a quick breakfast but poor Larry could not eat because he had a blood test coming up, followed by an EKG.

And guess what? His heart had put itself back in rhythm! So no need for the cardioversion after all. Now we must monitor his heart rate closely and see if things stay normal.

So we were on the road to home earlier than expected, and Larry was past ready to eat. A stop at West Virginia's favorite breakfast place soon fixed that, and I made like a hobbit and had a second breakfast!

On the way home we stopped at a thrift (of course!) and came away with a cute wicker chest of drawers. Once home we unloaded it and I painted it immediately while Larry finished up the windmil he was putting together. (The chest will need repaired in one place on the wicker, so I ordered a wicker repair kit and will try my hand at a fix.) Then a quick supper and I was off again to attend a bowed psaltery concert. What a treat, and a good way to end the day.

  1. That is a wonderful idea with the Fisher Houses, just fair as a thank you!!!
Wonderful Larry´s heart did the job itself, you must be so relieved. Ingo is not well again and finally decided to see the doc - wish me luck he really does (too early in the morning as I write)

  2. How awesome that Larry didn't have to have that heart procedure after all. And great that you could stay, free, at that house for veterans having surgery and such.
The psaltery concert was the icing on the cake.

  4. The Fisher houses and others like it like Ronald MacDonald houses are a godsend for so many people. I hope Larry's heart continues to behave itself.

  5. Good to hear Gary's heart is behaving itself! What a lovely place for families to stay while their patient is being treated at the VA. Our hospital (not VA) has a huge home which is offered for families who live quite a distance away when their patient is being treated. Nice to see an old mansion turned into a good use. I volunteered to serve Thanksgiving dinner there one year.

  7. I have heard of Fischer House. My sister's mother in law asked that donations in her memory go there so we sent something. She was a widow of a general who predeceased her by many years. My brother in law retired from the Army too.

  8. I hadn't heard of the Fisher houses but think they sound fantastic. What a help for the veterans and their families. I'm glad Gary's heart went back intp rhythm on its own. Hopefully, it will stay that way now. I didn't know what a bowed psaltery was so I learned two new things from your post today. Thanks!
