A Doless Day

81°f by 9am, when I finally got up! That's 27°C. Way too hot, and too humid, too early.

On the porch. Not real flowers, but I like it anyway.

I guess last week finally caught up with me, as i did diddlysquat yesterday! And went to bed at 9:30pm, really unheard of. And got up at 9am. Good grief.

Hot or not, Larry heads out to care for the chickens and check the garden.

But I feel well rested at last. A half of a small sleeping pill at night lately has helped a lot to be able to sleep despite the knee pain, which for some reason has gotten worse lately, not better. Maybe it's this humid weather?

Looks so cool, doesn't it? Don't be deceived,  it's hot!

So yesterday was a doless day, as is do less, as in being fairly worthless. I read blogs, started another Peter Mayle book, did a little laundry, roasted a chicken for dinner, and made a batch of dill pickles. And that was the day.

Today is usually booth day, but I stopped in Ripley on my way home Wednesday because we had sold that little chest of drawers and a cabinet so I knew there was tidying up to do. Ravenswood seems to be pretty quiet, and we stocked well there last week, so we can take a break.

Part of Larry's haul this morning: yellow cherry tomatoes.  Sweetest little taste bites ever.

It is supposed to be super hot today, and very humid, so it's inside work again.  I bought black cherries to make into jam because it's my Derek's favorite. I have bananas to use up in banana bread, a table full of great finds to price, and paperwork to catch up.

This Park Sherman rotating liquor dispenser is a recent find. Made in the 60's, and sometimes called a merry-go-round dispenser, this one was missing the glasses when I found it at Goodwill. Two days later, they had 4 of the 5 glasses original to the piece. I figured they had been separated; the missing one must have gotten broken in the donation process. I found the extra on ebay,  and it's on its way now. Total investment, about $20. Sale price: about $75.

Larry has furniture to work on, so we will be busy enough. Tomorrow is auction pickup day, for the things I bought through an online auction Wednesday evening. It is always nice to visit the Beardsley auction house--great staff, a cheerful environment,  and a beautiful drive along the Muskingum River. Just might have to include a stop in Marietta at our favorite lunch place there, the Lafayette Hotel's bar and grille, with its scenic view of the Ohio River.

Stay cool, friends!

    1. I guess it is, Angie, and yet it is so much smaller than last year. Seems tiny to me.

  5. It's impressive that even on a "doless" day, you managed to roast a chicken and make dill pickles! Larry's dedication to the chickens and garden in that heat is admirable, and those yellow cherry tomatoes looks delicious. What a fantastic find with the Park Sherman liquor dispenser and managing to get all the original glasses—that's a true treasure hunt success story. Enjoy your black cherry jam making and banana bread baking, and have a lovely time at the Beardsley auction house and the Lafayette Hotel. Stay cool.

  6. Thanks for the new word. I only wish I could remember new words. You work pretty hard even when you’re being doless. By the way, spellcheck does not like that word. 🤓

    1. It is apparently an old word, AC, probably brought to the Appalachians by the Scots-Irish. My neighbor was the first person I heard use it, describing someone known locally as a lazy guy. "Doless"was instantly defined for me from the context of her comment!

  8. Your doless day was still pretty busy. We are having the same weather here in KY. Too hot to do much of anything.

  9. I like your porch-flowers - and the temps! A tad too "cool" for me ;-)
Hope your knee is better soon.
For not doing you did a lot!!!
Gee, you´re so busy you make me breathless just reading along.
    I think Germans are different.
Not worth trying to sell used items.
When Mom fell sick for good she asked me to sell her near to un-used bike.
Aluminium, good stuff. I wanted €40. "Customer": rich Volkswagen-dude. Twice last minute he said he won´t make it, third time he was really there, with his greedy wife.
Payed €30 and took a mirror-candle holder "for free".
    Never again.
Found a platform where you can give away for free, peeps are on time and take the stuff and both sides are happy. In my case students and retirees > low on budget.

Stay cool?!!!! Worst summer here. Actually feels like Autumn.

  11. I liked seeing the local weather guy standing in a field of rice for the report yesterday...saying he might look soaking wet, because he was from the humidity. (I couldn't see it but did feel it.) I am skipping from one air conditioned venue to another, and though I open to 69 F in the mornings and accept the humidity...everything will be closed up and AC'd in an hour or so. You seem much better than totally doless - perhaps a half-doless situation! However, I know how I can talk for an hour with a son and appear to have all my ducks in a row, telling about lots of accomplishments, then bam, the next day is totally different and indeed, doless! I hope your weekend is enjoyable, no matter how much you dole.

  12. Sorry to read about your knee pain still after that surgery.
When we downsized we used an online auction service called MaxSold.com. Do you ever look at their online auctions?
I have had several doless days around here. With no AC and temps and humidity on the rise it helps to just stay put and stay in.
