All Kinds of Fun. Not.

Along my son's road

This has been a weekend of catching up.
Mostly catching up cleaning, and sorting out stuff  I have piled in my workroom over the summer. And paperwork, getting all my receipts into the spreadsheet.

So it hasn't been much fun at all, but all these things need to be done some time or other. In the process I put out more autumn decor and even some Halloween, since they are all mixed together in the same totes. Some is in the pile for Goodwill,  as are quite a few glass creamers I picked up when I first got interested in Early American Pattern Glass. At first I thought I would focus on creamers and pitchers but with time my interest has shifted and now I only buy colored pieces, because I mainly use them for display and I can use the different colors for different seasons. That's not to say I am disposing of all my clear pieces, though!

We cleaned windows too, another not-fun job that gets even less fun as we get older. They are all done, except for taking down the big picture window storm window and cleaning it and the outside of the picture window. That thing is heavy, so we will wait to get help with it. Of course in the process of doing the outside windows, Larry destroyed the bed of four o'clocks. I always know when I ask him to do any task he doesn't like, there will be a cost. I don't know if it's deliberate, or just a subconscious payback! For example, if I ask him to do anything in the garden, I know that some plants will be trampled or broken. He just doesn't see the importance of being careful with plants, I guess. And since I can't do everything myself, I just have to put up with his bull-in-a-china-shop ways.

This morning we are fixing the fridge, again. The evaporator fan in the freezer has died, again.  These little fans are cheaply made, and since Larry can't put an ice tray in the freezer without spilling water everywhere, ice builds up, blocks the vent, builds up behind the back wall of the freezer compartment,  and the fan burns up. This is the third time he has had to replace it, so perhaps he has learned a lesson?

Well, I didn't mean this to be a Larry-bashing post! He is good at many things, like making cider yesterday (which I processed and canned), taking care of our critters, lifting heavy stuff and lots of other things. I have to remind myself of that! Being with someone 24/7, as we are, makes all those irksome things just that much more noticeable while we take for granted the good things.

My main job today is to pack ebay sales. I sold both of those expensive Blenko vases,

which means I have some very careful packing to do. Then there are some delicate wineglasses,

a tall glass chimney and burner for a peg oil lamp,

two sets of 6 glasses,

and two hard to find Gay Fad glasses, from the 50s.

Lots of glass! It takes time to pack it right, and then I keep my fingers crossed that it all travels safely.

Well, back to mopping floors. Want to join me?

  1. When you ship, how to do ensure that it gets delivered safely. I mean, I know that you pack well, but do you use one of the courier services or the good ole post?

    1. I ship via the postal service, AC. To do it any other way from here is just too difficult. My mail carrier picks up right from our mailbox-- i have a large box for packages so they dont have to drive to the house.
In my experience, I have more problems with packages shipped to me with any other carrier. Breakage, wrong address delivery, delayed delivery, you name it. The po us okd-fashioned but dependable.

  2. Your glass pieces are gorgeous! That chimney is the tallest I have seen for the oil lamp.

    1. it's not as tall as it looks in the photo, probably about 10"? but just so narrow.

  3. Larry sounds a bit like my father. If you couldn't eat it, there was no need to pay attention to it. :)

  4. If it's any consolation my DH cannot get near the garden without stepping on plants that I've just mentioned he should avoid. It happens so often that I've actually forbid him anywhere near the flowers.
Washing windows is my absolutely worst chore. They always have streaks in spite of my best efforts.
The pieces of glass that you have to pack are lovely but no doubt will take a lot of cushioning to keep them from breaking. Good luck.

  5. Time to get a new fridge, Sue :-) You save more money on electricity...and you have a new one to use.

    1. This fridge is actually only 4 years old, Angie, and inexpensive to run as it's fairly small by US standards. It's just that he keeps dumping water in there. That freezes over the drain, which backs ice up into the coils and the fan, and the fanburns up. I;ll order a backup fan, again. And today I bought ice cube trays with covers! that should solve the problem. He's also forbidden from ever filling them again, LOL

  6. You sure would not want me to come even near you there! As I am clumsy we have loads of plastic plates...
Yes, I know of the 24/7 and seeing merely the "bad" things, thank you for the reminder. Ingo will soon have two weeks off and I work from home...

  7. Is that lamp an Aladdin brand? Your glassware is gorgeous. I am not surprised it sold quickly. Good luck with the shipping. What do you use to pack things like this?

    1. I couldn;t find a brand on it, Debby, but it was from England. It's very narrow, about 2" I think. Peg candle lamps were generally made to have these small burners and very tall chimneys.
As for packing, I wrap first in paper, then in bubblewrap, then cardboard. Then box it with padding all around, then another box with more padding all around. I have had pretty good results with this method. Just takes time.

  8. I'm in the catching up mode too. It's a pain! YOu're not Larry bashing, calling it like it is. They all have their issues, but I suppose they think we do too!

    1. exactly. He thinks I'm a nag, worry about too many little things, and slow down his work! All of which is kinda true...

  9. I recognize those glasses in the second to last photo. We purchased 8 several years ago, along with 8 juice ones of the same pattern at a house sale. I think we've broken 1 of the juice but the others are fine. I know you do a fine job packing. The plate I purchased from you arrived without a break.

    1. These are so sturdy, Marcia, as you know. And so pretty. We have 6 of them that we use ourselves.
Thanks for the compliment about my packing. I try hard to be sure things arrive intact.

  10. No, I shall not join you in mopping of any kind. But what I will join you in doing is filling one of those glasses with some kind of spirit and enjoy this nice call weather on the porch! Love that tall chimney lamp!

  11. Gorgeous glass and I'm glad you're shipping it with the PO. Our other people (brown shirts) pack things for me, so I pay extra sometimes for them to send pottery out. But the cost is really out there!

    1. Oooooh, you ship your pottery? I would love to buy a piece sometime. Email me if can, and let me know what you have for sale. It would be so nice to have it in my home, and think of you every time I see it.

  12. Packing that glass is a real challenge; I wish you both luck and skill. And I hear it about nearest and dearest getting annoying. For sure. It's turning off lights at the moment that is the sore spot. But there always is one. I tell him it's a good thing I love him. And then he tells me.
