72°f/22°C, overcast. We had a shower during the night, light but appreciated.
We stopped here for lunch on our way to the
VA Hospital in
Huntington for Larry's appointment today. We pass this place every time we make this trip, but don't often stop. Today we had a little extra time.
I
first stopped at this place in 2007, and it has come a long way since then---expanded places to plop down with your tray, more wild decor, even a wedding chapel and kissing booth.
It may not look like it in the photos, but the place was packed with tourists and workers from various big construction projects happening along Route 2, which follows the Ohio River (which river, by the way, belongs to West Virginia).
Larry couldn't wait to stick his face in the cutout.
The restrooms used to be outhouses, but they've had an upgrade, thankfully.
I said there was a wedding chapel, and believe it or not, there was a wedding going on while we were there!
People donate most of the stuff used for decoration, and bring license plates to tack to trees and various other places. You can also write your name on pretty much any surface.
There is seating inside the bus if you choose to eat in there. I didnt get a photo of the inside of the main "restaurant " section but you can see it, if you like, in the link to my past posts about Hillbilly Hotdogs.
The menu does actually offer some healthier options these days, like salads and chicken sandwiches. I opted for the latter, and it was huge and delicious; I left half of the bun off it and still could not eat the whole thing. And I have to say, if you want a hotdog, theirs are fantastic!

Sometimes I wish I liked hot dogs. As a teenager I remember eating burnt ones when we had weiner roasts but really I've always disliked them. That place does look unique.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's a very "West Virginia, mountain mama, Take me home" style place! I'd love to visit, although I don't really like hot dogs. My cousin used to live in Huntington, can't remember which street. Spent Christmas with him and family there many years ago. He was a doctor at the hospital. I remember going to a restaurant with a model train running on a track on a shelf all around the walls. I wonder if it's still there.
ReplyDeleteThis looks a lot of fun - eccentricity alive and well!
ReplyDeleteA few years ago were some of the tourists visiting there. It was quite the experience.
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say I've never seen anything like this!
ReplyDeleteI just read through Hillbilly Hotdogs menu and I may not have to eat today just from the caloric high I got. Looks like a fun place.
