New Year, Same Life

25°f/-4°C, overcast.

That moon last night!

I suppose this means precipitation in some form is on the way. Is that Jupiter just below and to the left of the moon? I tried asking Mother Googke but the answer wasn't clear to me.

We are back to normal life here, the holidays almost over, except for a visit to son Aaron's home. We were supposed to go today, but he is helping Derek with Derek's daughter Haley's septic tank issues. Poor girl, what a time for such issues! Since we can't help and would only be in the way, we will wait until tomorrow when hopefully the problem will be solved.

I spent yesterday cleaning up our finds from our trip to Logan Ohio the other day. Lots of cleaning! Look at these two crocks: the first,on the left a before and after, where I had cleaned one and the other is as we found it.

And here they are both cleaned, with thanks to Barkeeper's Friend!

A few more of our finds:

A nice 1950's plastic Santa bank,  that sells for about $50.

Two 50's ceramic Nubian candle holders, also selling for about $50,

"Derpy Dog" Occupied Japan Toothpick Holder, not valuable but cute,

and a bunch of wood blocks. There was much more that I didn't photograph--a 1942 Kodak camera, vintage red patent leather handbag, child's sewing machine, McCoy planters, a coonhunters cap with a carbide lamp, etc. It kept me busy for hours.

I stopped long enough to make a big pot of turkey vegetable soup, using up leftovers. It was perfect for a January day. My go-to seasonings for veggie soup are bay leaves, Worchestershire sauce, garlic, salt, pepper, and a little of my homemade hot sauce
To add a bit of zing. I also added thyme and parsley to yesterday's soup.

While working, I remembered that I can listen to audiobooks on Spotify. My oldest son gave me a subscription last Christmas,  which I didnt activate until April. I have really enjoyed it during the holidays,  listening to a lot of Irish Christmas music in addition to the old classics. We have listened to brief histories of Scotland and Ireland--pretty much a series of who did what to who to gain control/land/power-- and currently we are listening to a history of the Ohio Valley, also pretty bloody so far. What peolle do to people! Ji suppose the trend continues with the bews today of the US actions in Venezuela. When will we learn to keep our nose out of other countries? As many have said, I think Trump is trying to start a war so he can stay in office. Despicable man.

Yesterday I started listening to Mitch Albom's book, Twice. Pretty interesting take on time travel-- the protagonist can have a do-over for the bad things that happen in his life, with some unpredictable results.

Time to get back to work. More pricing for the booth, and continue taking down Christmas.

    1. I meant to get back to you about that, FG! I don't know if it's was my mother's tradition from England, or my Dad's from his German mother...or maybe from his Irish father? But I have don't this every single year since I had my own home. Good thing we like cabbage!

  3. Happy new year! You know, I was browsing in an antique store. They had a toy iron. An electric one that plugged in. My. How the world has changed!

  4. The second to last book I read in 2025 was Twice. It was a great read.
My seasonings for turkey vegetable soup are very similar to yours. The last of it is in the freezer for another time.

  5. The picture that I have of Albom in my head might go back to the 70s when he was a youngish tv commentator in Detroit. The Detroit stations were the ones that we mostly got when we lived in Sarnia (in Canada but really just an hour north of Detroit).

  6. Some of the items you get really are grubby! They shouldn't last long once you have them in your booths. I hope 2026 brings you lots of good things!!

  7. Luckily, I can just ask my husband what I'm seeing in the sky since that's an interest of his. :)
