Town Day

60°f/15.5°C, sunny but clouds moving in. Storms expected in the afternoon.  Yesterday's high was 84! Way too hot. Stinking are arriving. Bah! One Monarch butterfly seen yesterday, and a (very late) hummingbird was here Monday evening.

First, an update on my friend Suzy. She had heart surgery yesterday for a triple bypass, so good vibes, thoughts, and prayers are all appreciated.

I have not talked to her yet , but hope to do so this afternoon.

Yesterday was a town day. Our friend Rachel, who inspired me to get my first booth, is in from her new home in Florida, and invited us to lunch. We met her at Shari's, and while there at least a dozen other friends and acquaintances came in. All were concerned and asking about Suzy. Small towns you know, word gets around quickly! Shari and I talked briefly about the upcoming Halloween open mic plans. Larry took his tractor tire to the shop while I was talking with Shari, then we left for a brief stop at the Goodwill, where I found some nice things,
like this 1903 small compote by US Glass in the pattern they called "The States".

I also found this oil painting in a beautiful, heavy old frame for only $5.99. I believe the painting is much more recent than the frame.

Also found a pretty teapot,

and a Blenko Glass "Sunflower" bowl, made right here in West Virginia., about 60 miles from my house.

Last, this carrying case chock full of 45's from the 50's and 60's. There are lots of familiar songs here, like Battle of New Orleans by Johnny Mathis, and artists like The Four Tops, The Beach Boys, Chubby Checker, etc.

And then there was this weird thing:

Creepy! But it will sell. Some people love creepy stuff.

Next stop was the grocery store, where I picked up
half price whole grain deli bread, some 75% off sundried tomatoes (never bought them before, but many recipes seem to call for them), and pears, bananas, oranges and grapes all marked way down. We love fruit, so that was a real score for us. Fish sticks were on sale for half price, and laundry detergent was buy one get one free, so I came out of the store feeling pretty happy for a change.

Next stop, pick up the tractor tire, stop at Shari's again to pick up our eggs, milk and butter from Maddie the milk girl, then the road home,

a stop at the mailbox,

a greeting from weedy marigolds in the garden,

and home to my favorite chair, and a sunset view.

Yesterday was son Aaron's 53rd birthday! He had the day off and spent it as he often does, working on someone else's car. He's a good man, kind, funny, and so smart. He constantly amazes me. You can see photos of his growing up years here, and a more recent post about him here.

  3. I love that sunflower bowl and those 45s are pretty cool. It reminds me of when I used to buy 45s at the local record store in the 60s. Have a good day!

  4. You packed your day like getting 10 LP of potatoes in a 5 LP sack!

  5. Lost my comment. Don't know what I do that makes it disappear. Was asking how far to you have to drive to town? Here we drive 20 minutes either south or north to get to a town to shop. Never have lived in such a rural area before but loving the beauty, the quiet and being so close to oldest daughter and family.

    1. Marcia, it's about the same, 20 minutes to Ripley, 35 minutes to Ravenswood, 40 to Spencer. All are quite small; no Lowe's, Home Depot, Costco, etc. Biggest store is the Walmart in Ripley. Ripley has a Kroger, no ther grocery except Walmart. Spencer has a small grocery and a small Walmart, and Ravenswood has a small grocery. So shopping is limited, unless we drive an hour south to Charleston, or north to Parkersburg. Online shopping has been a huge benefit!

    1. Ha! Seems that way! But booth days don't count, they're work days. Town days to me are errands days--no booths, no doctors, no open mic or appointmentsof any kind.
I love it when I can just stay here for several days in a row. It seems like that happens less and less often, sadly. Which is one reason I love winter!
