People Watching at the Auction

Aaron and I both took pictures yesterday. Some of the ones below are from his camera, some from mine. Both of us seemed to be watching people as well as watching the sale.

There's more to do than bidding and buying at an auction.
Mud-bogging: a big guy slogs his way across one of many muddy, muddy places in the outside large equipment auction field.

Talking: catching up with friends is an important part of the day. Jaime enjoys the natural breeze as a lot of manmade breeze blows by in the conversations around her.

Exploring: Michaela is content to say on firm ground as James climbs to the heights above the animal pens in one of the barns where the auction was held.

Remembering: an elderly gentleman with his homemade walking stick passes piles of draft horse harness, perhaps remembering the days when he followed a team of Belgians across a mountain cornfield.

Playing: a young fellow peers through a crack in a piece of machinery. I have no idea what this thing is supposed to be. Anyone know?

Contrasting: modern machinery with old ways. A group of Amish men pass the horse barns at the auction, against a foreground of farm equipment.

Cogitating and splashing: Aaron ignores the mud as he examines a piece of equipment. Michaela? I think she's completely enjoying the mud.
More auction photos coming in another post.

  2. This reminds me of the stock sales we used to go to when we were small. We'd spend almost all day there, because they'd sell the stock first and then what we called "junk". I think I still have some stuff we bought at those - they were in Moorefield, around an hour away from home. On occasion, we'd also go to Rio Mall, in Rio, WV - which has one of the best second hand stores.

  3. Congratulations on the day out, and the photos, and the rust-free truckbed! I love fairs and auctions... mud, not so much.

  4. We'll be cleaning mud for days. We stripped the kids down to underwear--they were astonished! But there was no other way they could sit in my car. Luckily I had plastic bags to put dirty stuff in so we all took off our boots and bagged them, and put cardboard and newspapers on the floors and on the seat under James--he was still too dirty even without his pants! The kids covered up with a couple of my coats I'd brought along just in case we needed them. So it worked out.

Aaron will be taking the tool body off his truck and putting on the one he bought. He was so pleased to get it, for half what he expected to pay. he had to wait til the bitter end to get it, but it was worth the wait.

  5. I love the pictures and the mix of old and new and young and old. I'm not sure what the machinery is the little boy is in, but I thought it'd make a good chicken coop or pig house if you take off the wheels. I'm sure my husband could turn it into something.

  6. LOL--i'm sure he could, Laura. I was thinking the same thing--what could this be used for? I think it might be a silage or fodder chopper of some sort. That was one of the fun parts of the day--trying to guess what the different things were used for.

  8. Someone really has a photographers eye! Those are terrific people watching pics. Ah, I can't wait to go to the county fair and auction once we get up to our town.

  9. I would hazard a guess that it is for cutting silage.

  10. That was my first farm equipment auction and it was a lot of fun. I'm pretty sure James and Michaela agrees. You can't go wrong with mud and tons of things to crawl on and over.

  11. Kid heaven wasn't it? Now I need to drag you to a farm auction where they have all kinds of stuff, not just equipment. You'd love it.
