34 and overcast. A possibility of showers today.
Yesterday we finally moved this huge cupboard to our booth.
This was found in the old general store I wrote about recently; considering it had been in a very poor storage environment, it was in remarkably good condition, just needing a lot of cleaning and some Howard's Restor-A-Finish magic. Heavy? Yes indeed! But somehow us two old people got it loaded and into the mall.
We also brought in this cute small enamel top table, and a KitchenAid mixer.
The mixer is not an antique or even vintage, but I bought it in an auction for a granddaughter who had already had one given to her! Since I still have my mother's, I don't need this one.
Speaking of old people, do you sometimes feel like you are "aging out"? Right now I am listening to the news on the radio, and the reporters sound so...young, like my grandchildren's ages. Which of course, they could be since my grandchildren are all in their 20's and 30's except for one who is 16.
It is not just the reporters' voices, of course. It is the topics, too. Hip-hop music? The problems of trans people, single people, athletes...all worthy subjects and I listen and learn, but often I am left feeling out of sync with the rest of the world.
Then there is the way people dress, wearing pajamas to town, clothing bought new with so many holes it looks doubtful it will survive the day, hair in every color of the rainbow, tattoos everywhere. The hair thing is something I too might have tried years ago had it been available, but the rest just leaves me feeling like an alien life force.
I know I am country, and old-fashioned. The shows that discuss Hollywood, Broadway, stars and rock musicians leave me cold. Some days I yearn for a radio show that just talks about things I am interested in. There was such a show in the 70s, out of Athens, Ohio, that was a call-in talk show about gardening, canning, frugal living, planting by the signs and so on. I loved it.
And I just realized I dated myself again: radio shows. Do younger generations even know there is such a thing as radio?
I remember my parents feeling confused and even angry in the 60s and 70s as the world changed in what seemed like minutes from the staid Eisenhower era to hippies, protests, and flower power. So the way I am feeling today is nothing new. The world will teeter on its way whether I agree with it or not. At least I have my small haven of home, where nothing changes much but the calendar. And that, after all, is one thing we all have in common.
In today's world you have to create you own. Lots of garbage to watch and listen to, no thank you. I rather read a good book and listen to what I want in a podcast or on youtube. It's the only way to stay sane. :)
ReplyDeleteWell said, Bill!
DeleteThat's an amazing big cabinet...moved by non other than the older generation, but not old. I liked listening to radio shows, and when commuting or going to visit friends would listen to books on CD's. My new car's CD is broken, so I'm thinking to buy a new one for it. Wish you were closer because I'd love that mixer!
ReplyDeleteThat's true, Barb. I don't feel old, although I do get tired more easily. But still, I tackle anything I might have tackled when younger. Might take longer but it gets done.
DeleteI'm beginning to understand how Grannie felt when our currency "went decimal". She was sure that having 100 pence to the pound was going to be much more complicated than having 12 pence to the shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. However would we cope without half-crowns and farthings?
ReplyDeleteWe were just wondering the other day, while watching a movie, when the British currency changed. I still need to look that up.
DeleteI am still teaching right now and I feel like many kids are dressed inappropriately! I can't help it! lol We had thunder yesterday with bad storms and snow today. It ain't right. I did read about snow coming ten days after thunder in January. I hope it happens here.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that as a teacher you must see all kinds of dress and hairstyles today! It is hard to decide what is cool and what's just inappropriate. But then I guess it's not up to us to decide.
DeleteI just have to leave a quick comment to say for quite a while I've had my eyes open for one or more of those sturdy enamel tables. The ones I've seen in recent years have been in truly sad shape, and I think I've "aged out" of doing the kind of excellent rehab work on all kinds of projects that you and Larry take in stride! I also love the huge cabinet, and would love to bring one home - I probably have just enough oomph left in me (on some days) to rehab wood, because I just love it so much. And that toy oven? I watched a YT vid once of a fellow who rehabbed one of those from A to Z, using a shopful of fancy equipment. It was the kind of project I can't even feel envious about because it is taking rehab to a level I would never have done, at any age ;)
ReplyDeleteBoy, I wish we lived closer! I could sure set you up with one or two tables! I am thinking that we need to start taking our age into account before we buy some things. Because we can't always find help to move these heavy things. And some years back the doc told me no heavy lifting, lol. You can see how well I am listening.
DeleteI can't count the number of times I've wished we lived closer! I feel like we're sort of long-distance neighbors :)
