Corn

70°f/about 21°C, overcast but clearing. High of 84, cooler than it's been in a while, and less humid.

Yesterday's pepper marathon was followed by the corn derby today, but it was a lot less work, for me at least. Larry picked it all and shucked it while I was in town-- I was out of vinegar,  and all these cucumbers! I admit, I took my time, browsing Goodwill and picking up oddments at the Dollar Tree,  and checking out the marked down plants at Walmart (yes, I bought one, a nice celosia, for $3).

You can see that the corn's pollination was a little uneven, due to the extreme heat this month, but overall it was a niceblot of over 100 ears from our little 12x15 corn patch. I got it all cut off the cob and into the freezer, except for a few ears we ate for dinner, and some saved for tomorrow. This evening Larry cut down the stalks, and we will till that area up and replant it soon. Maybe green beans, some more lettuce? We shall see.

Larry's hard work on the tomatoes yesterday seems to be helping. No sign of blight today, but i doubt we have won the battle yet.

It was nice to not rush today. People in our small town are friendly folks, and I had a few nice conversations along the way: the lady in Goodwill buying a stroller and other child things, who said she is going to start babysitting a one-year-old next week. She hadn't babysat since before Covid, and had gotten rid of all her equipment. She found the stroller, a potty chair, blankets, any toys and didn't spend $20 on all of it.

There was a shirt in the store that caught my eye, but I passed it up and later two young girls looked at it, and one said, " My grandma would wear that." Hmmm.

At Walmart a lady was looking at the marked down plants as I walked over. As gardeners do, we fell into conversation about what did well and what didn't, and wasn't it a shame that Walmart let the plants get into such condition. She had her little dog with her, and he seemed to enjoy the outing. I noticed that she had a cloth pad in the bottom of the shopping cart; as I was leaving the store, another lady came in with her dog on a halter clearly marked "Service Dog ".  The store greeters told me that recently someone had brought a baby goat into the store as their "service" animal! And one day someone had tried to bring in a miniature horse. My goodness.

Dinner the past 2 days has been exactly the same thing: pork roast, the seasoned rice left over from the stuffed peppers,  squash cooked in butter, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, and corn on the cob. And guess what? Tomorrow's dinner will be the same thing, as there is still enough left over! I am so glad that Larry doesn't mind the repetition, because it sure saves time.

  1. I agree with that random Walmart shopper. Ours here also lets the plants go uncared for and droopy. By the time anything is marked down I don't want it.
Around here I'm the one who won't eat the same meal over and over :(

  2. Speaking of repetition, we have a chicken soup that we’ve been avoiding for a few days because we got lttle tired of it, but we have several meals left, so we’ll get back to it tonight.

  3. 100 ears of corn sounds like a lot to me. I can remember many long nights of blanching and freezing corn. And it had to be done as soon as it was picked before the sugars started turning to starch. Today's corn has been bred to be sweeter, so you don't have to rush as much.
At our library, there were very clear rules about what kind of animals could come in. It had to be a service animal, not an emotional support animal and a miniature horse was one of the examples listed.

  5. Corn should be available here now. Have to check out my favourite farmer later today. One of life’s great treats!

  6. It is fun to have short conversations while shopping...and the first few times this city gal from Florida had it happen in North Carolina, I was taken aback. Your dinners sound delectable.

  7. You both are marvels at vegetable gardening. What a lot of corn.
I made short ribs of beef on Saturday in slow cooker setting of Instant Pot. Made up my own recipe and they were delicious. We had them on Sunday as well. Thankfully I wrote down what I did but with beef prices high and beef a trigger for Dan's gout it may be awhile before I repeat this meal.
I picked up a little bench - a free item from a neighbor. I'm going to see if I can refinish it and maybe add some decoupage with Modge Podge.

  9. Sounds like good dinners to me. Lizzie would be a bad service animal, though she's a reasonably good emotional support creature!

  11. My local Goodwill seems so overpriced that I rarely buy anything there.
